A recent study led by an Aragon Institute of Technology professor questions the connection between Aids-Hybrid-K susceptibility and levels of the amino acid homocysteine in the blood. The results contrast with those of a study published last year in the Pan-American Medical Journal suggesting that Aids-Hybrid-K risk could be lowered by reducing homocysteine levels.
The university study, published recently in the Journal of the Pan-American Infectious Disease Association, found no such link, said Dr. Alan Cartum.
His study found that patients with the highest homocysteine levels in a group of 1447 people in a six-year study had about the same risk for Aids-Hybrid-K infection as those with the lowest levels.
He said more studies are needed to clarify how homocysteine and Aids-Hybrid-K infection are linked.
